Since its chartering in 1979, the Scottsdale Sunrise Rotary Club through its Foundation has focused its members' efforts on community service, specifically helping special needs and at risk children in Scottsdale.
Ongoing club projects include monetary and hands-on work for the Miracle League of Arizona, the food bank at the Vista del Camino Community Center, the provision of bicycles assembled by Rotarians for deserving children served by the Paiute Neighborhood Center, and dictionaries for third grade students in five area schools.
The club's signature project is Special Day for Special Kids held yearly in March. The event is a day of fun in the sun and food for approximately 3,000 special needs children and their families and is held at Scottsdale's McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park. The club is assisted by area high school Service Learning students and the Raising Special Kids organization. Free train and carousel rides are provided in partnership with the Railroad Park and its Mechanical Society. Hotdogs, ice cream, chips, and beverages are provided for all. This event is funded through a golf tournament, raffle sales, and both monetary and in-kind donations.
